An air waybill (AWB) is the transport document covering the shipment of goods by air. It serves as a contract of carriage between the shipper and the airline, a receipt for goods delivered to the carrier, and a document accompanying the cargo throughout transit. Unlike an ocean Bill of Lading, the AWB is not a document of title (it does not convey ownership of the goods).
There are two types: the Master Air Waybill (MAWB), issued by the airline, and the House Air Waybill (HAWB), issued by the freight forwarder or consolidator. In consolidated shipments, each individual shipment has a HAWB grouped under a single MAWB.
The air waybill is essential for customs clearance of goods imported or exported by air. The AWB number is declared in the pedimento and allows customs authorities to track merchandise from origin to final destination.
