Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is a physical inspection of goods performed in the exporting country before they are shipped to their destination. Its purpose is to document the condition, quantity, characteristics, and packaging of goods to prevent discrepancies during customs clearance at destination.
Pre-shipment inspection allows detection of problems before shipping: wrong merchandise, incorrect quantities, inadequate packaging, or incomplete documentation. Fixing these issues at origin is far less costly than facing seizure or rejection at destination.
Pre-shipment inspection is not a legal requirement in Mexico but a voluntary risk management practice. However, it is highly recommended for operations with new suppliers, high-value merchandise, or products subject to strict regulations.
