Also known as: Bill of Lading, B/L, Ocean B/L
Maritime transport document serving as a contract of carriage, receipt of goods, and document of title.
The Bill of Lading (B/L) is the most important document in international ocean shipping. It serves three simultaneous functions: it is a contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier, a receipt for the goods delivered to the carrier, and a document of title that allows the transfer of ownership of the goods.
Without the original Bill of Lading (or its electronic equivalent), the importer cannot take delivery of the goods at the port. It is a title document: whoever holds it has rights over the cargo.
In Mexico, the B/L is submitted as part of the customs clearance documentation and its data must match what is declared in the pedimento. The adoption of the electronic B/L (eB/L) is growing and helps reduce delays caused by physical document shipping.
