Detention is the charge a shipping line bills the importer for keeping the container outside the port or destination terminal beyond the agreed free time. It differs from demurrage, which is charged for the container inside the port. Typical free time is 5-10 days, after which progressive daily charges accrue. Detention includes the time the container spends at the importer's warehouse during unloading and the time to return it empty to the shipping line's designated container depot.
Demurrage
An additional charge by the shipping line when a container is not returned within the agreed free time period after discharge at port.
