Every product that crosses an international border must be assigned a tariff classification code. This code, based on the Harmonized System (HS) used by over 200 countries, determines the duty rate you pay, the trade statistics your country collects, and the regulatory requirements your product must meet. Getting the classification right is essential: an incorrect code can lead to overpaying duties, underpaying duties (which triggers penalties), or failing to comply with import regulations.
Open your Camtom account and navigate to TariffPro from the main menu. If this is your first time using TariffPro, the system will show a brief onboarding tour. You can follow the tour or skip it and come back to it later from the Help menu.
Click the 'New Classification' button. TariffPro will ask you to describe your product. The more detail you provide, the more accurate the AI suggestion will be. Think of it like describing the product to someone who has never seen it before.
A good product description includes: what the product is, what it is made of, how it is used, and how it is packaged. For example: 'Stainless steel water bottle, double-walled vacuum insulated, 500ml capacity, for personal use, retail packaged' is much better than just 'water bottle'.
TariffPro will analyze your description and present a ranked list of possible HTS codes. Each suggestion includes the full HTS code, the official description from the tariff schedule, the applicable duty rate, and a confidence score indicating how well the suggestion matches your product.
Click on the HTS code that best matches your product. TariffPro will show a detailed view with the complete tariff line, including the general duty rate, any special duty rates under trade agreements, and any applicable trade remedies like antidumping duties.
After selecting the classification, TariffPro shows any additional import requirements associated with that HTS code. These may include requirements from the FDA, USDA, EPA, CPSC, FCC, or other agencies. Review these carefully to ensure you have all necessary permits and certifications before shipping.
Some products require you to register with specific agencies before importing. For example, food products require FDA facility registration, and electronic devices may need FCC certification. Start these registrations early as they can take weeks to process.
Click 'Save Classification' to store the result in your TariffPro library. The saved classification includes the product description, the selected HTS code, the duty rate at the time of classification, and any notes you add. You can reference this classification for future shipments of the same product without repeating the process.
“The best time to classify your product is before you ship it. The worst time is when it is sitting at the port waiting to clear customs.”
